STACEE in the News

Oct 2001 -- After approximately four years of work, construction of the full STACEE experiment with 64 heliostats and FADC digitizers on all channels is complete.

Aug 2001 -- The STACEE collaboration presents preliminary results on the detection of Markarian 421 in outburst at the 27th International Cosmic Ray Conference in Heidleburg, Germany using the 48-channel partially constructed experiment. The STACEE result is the only detection of the source in gamma rays at energies below 200 GeV.

Sep 1999 -- STACEE reported results on the Crab Nebula and Pulsar at the 26th International Cosmic Ray Conference in Salt Lake City Utah and the associated GeV-TeV Gamma-ray Workshop. We detect the Crab at high significance (about 7 sigma). See results and publications sections for details..

Mar 1999 -- We reported a preliminary result on our detection of the Crab Nebula at the American Astronomical Society Meeting in Chicago. This is a significant milestone in the development of the STACEE program. See the press release by Steve Koppes of the University News Office for a description of what STACEE does and what this first results means.

May 1998 -- A feature article is published in the Albuquerque Journal, entitled "Catching a Blue Streak".

Oct 1997 -- A news article about STACEE scientists has been published in the University of Chicago Chronicle. The article, written by Diana Steele of the University News Office is entitled, Seaching for gamma rays under dark desert skies. This story gives a great non-technical overview of the goals and status of the STACEE experiments. Click here to view the complete article on-line.

For a complete summary of the current status of the STACEE experimental program, including instrument details, publications, and science motivation, see the main STACEE Collaboration Home Page at UCLA.
